What more can anyone say about today’s episode other than give the freaking Emmy to the show, cast, crew, writers, NBC…. Everyone! This is the kind of show that soap operas are made of and more. All of the scenes today were just exceptional from Stephen’s scenes with Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) to his one pivotal scene with Bo (Peter Reckell) it was like an excavation was taking place in my chest with all the feels. The whole storyline with Bo and whatever fate may or may not befall him is just one more reason the genre is not dead. If one can conjure up those feelings some thirty plus years after the characters arrive, make long standing friendships in both the characters and cast to bring about what we saw today…. Come on NBC, ABC and CBS quit with the so-called “original” broadcasting. Yes, cooking shows and talk fests are cheap to make, however, they’re not what I would call invest-worthy. One can’t invest in them as long term as one can these family oriented, hour long dramas we watch every single weekday of the year. It is my sincere hope that based off of the strength of today’s show alone, NBC sees fit to keep DAYS OF OUR LIVES on the air for as long as the writing, acting and production values continue to be this good. The reason I titled the post thusly is because of the magnificent film Brokeback Mountain starring the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Like the long term relationship between Ennis and Jack, Steve and Bo share that same intimacy in terms of their emotional agency in each other. Kudos to Stephen and Peter for today’s show.

Okay, so today was the first day I didn’t entirely hate Kayla (Mary Beth Evans). She was finally written in character and concerned for Steve. I did love the Kleenex box throwing though. That was classic Steve and Kayla. I loved the part where Kayla told Steve whatever threat they were going to face, they’d face it together. The look on Stephen’s face was just priceless. You could tell he was liking that Steve and Kayla were getting back on track. Though I have to say this still does not in any way quell my want for Steve and Ava (Tamara Braun). In fact this doesn’t do anything for my wish that they’d hold off on putting the Johnsons back together until Steve and Ava have had a bit of a go…. Or a long bit of a go. I have to give a couple of honourable mentions today. The first has to be Kate Mansi who plays Abigail Devereaux. She has been killing her scenes with Robert Scott Wilson who plays Ben Rogers. Then there are Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso as the eponymous Bo and Hope Brady. Their scenes the past couple of days have been incredible to watch and as an old time DAYS fan, I couldn’t be more ecstatic. I also have to give props to the now departed Daniel Cosgrove who played Aiden Jennings. What a thankless job of having to pull that 180° turn. Daniel Cosgrove will go far I believe. He’s that perfect mix of old time Hollywood and new style solid acting. My kudos to him for his amazing work on the show.

Can I say how much I truly do hate Kayla (Mary Beth Evans)? I’m just going to say it, I hate Kayla Brady. I’m not even going to use Steve’s last name because quite frankly, she doesn’t deserve it. What she said to Steve today was unconscionable. Yeah, I know all the “yadda yadda” about Steve left her and she didn’t know why or where he was going, but let me say this, how many times have Steve and Kaylas been in the thick of it, yet no one bailed? And certainly there wasn’t this amount of enmity. Then the cutter Kayla issued in telling Steve to stay away from their son Joey (James Lastovic). What a bitch. I’m hoping this whole note thing is a prelude the return of Emmy Award Winner Tamara Braun as our resident Mob Princess Ava Vitali. Yeah am I hoping old flames are rekindled? You’re fucking right!

So the title is a little silly. But looks like Steve has either a stalker or something else is amiss. Steve received a note at the hospital that read: You thought you were rid of me for good? Didn’t you?. My thoughts: None other than the beautiful and sensuous Ava Vitali (Tamara Braun). Why do I think this? Considering her first airdate is just a little over a month from now, it’s my guess they’re building her back up in a big way. And what am I hoping? Rekindling of some old feelings. Now I know the Steve and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) fans are going to go ballistic, they always do, but I don’t care. I want Steve and Ava together at least for a short time. Steve and Kayla’s fans know their couple is endgame, so could you just allow us Tamara fans or Steve and Ava fans a little slack? Not sure how long Tamara is signed for, so please at least let us have something.

Well, these writers certainly are pulling out all the soap tropes to get Steve and Bo (Peter Reckell) back to Salem. First the whole thing with the plane crash, then the bike needing repairs, then the running out of gas, then the arrest by a Jackie Gleeson in “Smokey and the Bandit” wannabe. Instead of playing this straight out, they’re making us wait too … damn … long to get Steve and Bo home. Now let’s talk about the fact I really want to smash in Kayla’s (Mary Beth Evans) face in for two things; 1) how she’s treating Caroline (Peggy McCay), and 2) how she’s been towards Steve and Bo. I kinda want her to fall in a vat of acid and drown. Sorry “Sweetness” fans, but tis the truth. Have I said how much I really want my girl Ava (Tamara Braun) to get back to Salem? Yeppers. I really would love it if Ava reclaimed Steve and more or less told Kayla to shut her self-righteous mouth. There I said it and I’m happy. Don’t like it, tough. I’m defending my guy Steve.

Okay so I’m going to throw you Steve and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) fans a bone. That kiss I know is something you were waiting for so I’ll be magnanimous and not mention that one person I know just curdles the blood of the Steve and Kayla fans. You know who she is but I’ll not remind you of her by mentioning her name. Instead I’ll give you a featured screencap of that kiss. Don’t say I don’t give ya anything. Like Nick Fury said, I’m nice like that. I’m sorry for the fact I’m not getting these up till this morning, but yesterday was really a busy day for me. We had a general federal election, then the Toronto Blue Jays are in the division finals, and of course, the Star Wars trailer was to drop.

I know these are really late in the day/night but my the tool I use to upload the screencaps to the gallery was just being persnickety. Seriously, how difficult is it to get one program to cooperate? Apparently pretty difficult. I had to do some working around and I hate troubleshooting. Just hate it with a passion. Anyway, I know I’m going to draw some heat from the Steve and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) fans, but could Kayla just shut her mouth occasionally? My god what a harpy. Does she truly expect Steve to just drop all of this with Bo (Peter Reckell) just because? While yes he made that promise to her and Joey (James Lastovic) can she not trust his instinct? Please soap gods, have mercy on this Steve fan and put him with Ava Vitali (Tamara Braun) if not for a little bit. Make Kayla jealous enough she’s going to shut her yap for a bit. So Steve and Kayla fans, have at me. I’m strong and can take it.

I just found this article from early September of Stephen after his return to DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Here Stephen discusses his return as well as he picks his favourite scene of all time as our Patchman. Here’s a repost of the article. I couldn’t embed the actual video they used on the site, so I went to Youtube and found the entire scene including when Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) found Steve on the docks. Enjoy.

50 Years of Days of Our Lives: Stephen Nichols Picks His Favorite “Patch” Scene

Beauty wanted to tame the Beast… and she also wanted to take a look under that damn patch! When we asked Days of Our Lives icon Stephen Nichols—aka Steve “Patch” Johnson—to pick his favorite moment from his many years on the NBC soap, he wasted no time mind-tripping through lists. “There are so many scenes I remember fondly and so many great ones I’ve probably forgotten,” Nichols says. “But the one that’s still the most meaningful to me, after all these decades, took place [in 1986] when Steve was badly wounded and Kayla [Mary Beth Evans] took off his famous patch to clean his face.”

But first he put up quite a battle. The setup, recalls Nichols, “had Kayla working down at the riverfront clinic and Steve chasing her around there for months. He was sooo into her! Then he got beaten up and she found him. She wants to take care of him—which means touching his face and taking off that patch—but he’s thinking, ‘Oh, no you don’t! Back off, baby! You’re not looking under there! Nobody looks under there!’ But Kayla was persistent and what she saw didn’t gross her out or make her scream and run. She accepts Steve completely, and there’s nothing more romantic than that.”

Was there ever talk of actually showing what was under the patch? “The producers would never go for anything gory or grisly, or showing the eyelid sewn shut or anything like that,” Nichols says. “After all that mysterious buildup, it would have to be something pretty horrible. Better that we used our imaginations. Besides, that scene was all about Kayla’s reaction to what she was seeing. And Mary Beth’s performance was—as always—absolutely extraordinary.”

Here’s that memorable moment:
